Beethoven was taught by Haydn and held him in the highest esteem. In this concert we can see just how far Beethoven took his ideas beyond the master himself. His first symphony is now a familiar work, but was revolutionary in its time and it is this ground breaking innovation that Douglas Boyd and the Manchester Camerata seek to capture in their live recordings and performances of the cycle of Beethoven symphonies. John Lill is a regular and much appreciated visitor to Sheffield. His Beethoven performances are legendary; here he performs the first piano concerto.
