The Heeley Art Club is the oldest club in Sheffield being formed in 1895. This exhibition of paintings, by club members, is being held in the Winter Gardens from the 10th to the 19th of October.

Heeley Art Club, named because many of its original members lived in Heeley, has survived for 110 years providing members with a source of mutual encouragement and criticism. The original members were all amateurs dissatisfied with the Sheffield Society of Artists, dominated by professionals running the society for their own benefit. After a modest start in Thirlwell Road Weslyan School the club quickly moved to Meersbrook Vestry Hall. Over the years the club has had various locations and now meets at Millhouses Methodist Chapel.

The original aim has changed little. The meetings still encourage both the study and practice of pictorial art. The fortnightly meetings are well supported by loyal and enthusiastic artists, and exhibitions are well attended.

At one of the first exhibitions the walls were crowded with pictures, at prices from five shillings. Dealers were queuing for the doors to open. Exhibitions walls are still crowded but prices have gone up a little.
